In August, NEV Sales Share Tops 60% for First Time, Up 17.8% Year on Year

On September 10, according to a CCTV News report, the dominant position of China's new energy vehicles has continued to consolidate, becoming a key incremental driver stabilizing the overall industry. The latest data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (hereinafter referred to as the "CAAM") show that the monthly sales share of new energy vehicles hit a new high again: in August, production and sales of new energy vehicles reached 1.653 million and 1.643 million units respectively, up 18.9% and 17.8% year on year, and sales of new new energy vehicles accounted for 60.6% of total new vehicle sales.

The 60.6% monthly share of new vehicle sales marked the first time that the penetration rate of new energy vehicles climbed above the 60% threshold. Looking back at the trend since the beginning of this year, the pace of this figure's rise has far exceeded industry expectations. According to a Xinhua News Agency report, in the first eight months, China's automobile production and sales reached 20.255 million and 20.315 million units respectively, edging down year on year; among them, production and sales of new energy vehicles reached 10.668 million and 10.65 million units respectively, with year-on-year growth of more than 10% for both, and the share of new new energy vehicle sales rose to 52.4%. This means that the 60.6% penetration rate in August alone was more than 8 percentage points higher than the cumulative 52.4% level in the first eight months, and the replacement of fuel vehicles by new energy vehicles is accelerating.

Chen Shihua, deputy secretary-general of the CAAM, analyzed that in August, automobile consumption subsidies were continuously upgraded in many places, and automobile production and sales grew month on month. According to data from the China Passenger Car Association, in August retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles reached 1.005 million units, with a penetration rate of 65.2%, up 9.9 percentage points year on year, setting a new record high. The penetration rate of new energy vehicles among domestic brands reached as high as 83.9%, while the penetration rate of new energy vehicles in the luxury car segment was 38.9%, and the electrification transformation across all price ranges is accelerating.

Data on exports are equally striking. According to a CCTV News report, in August China's automobile exports reached 1.01 million units, up 65.3% year on year, with monthly export volume exceeding 1 million units for three consecutive months. Among them, exports of new energy vehicles reached 526,000 units, up 1.3 times year on year. The proportion of new energy vehicle exports in total automobile exports has exceeded 50% for three consecutive months, reaching 52.08% in August alone.
