IDC: AI Expected to Generate $22.5 Trillion in Global Economic Value by 2031

According to IDC, by 2031, AI is expected to cumulatively generate $22.5 trillion in global economic value through productivity gains, new revenue models, and business transformation.

 

However, the specific timeline remains uncertain. Short-term value depends on how quickly organizations move from pilot phases to actual deployment, with workforce transformation, upskilling, and AI agents playing a central role.

 

IDC analysts also noted that while conflicts in the Middle East could trigger energy price volatility, affecting infrastructure resilience and supply chains, thereby putting pressure on economies, they will not disrupt the overall market trajectory.

 

Meanwhile, new research released by IDC shows that enterprise AI is rapidly evolving from general-purpose models to a multi-model, multimodal, and multi-agent landscape. This shift marks the end of the "one-size-fits-all model" approach and introduces new complexities for enterprises in designing, governing, and optimizing AI systems.

 

Organizations are adopting a "model selection" strategy and must now manage increasing complexities in model selection, governance, and orchestration.

 

IDC emphasizes that although AI investment is accelerating, adoption across most enterprises remains at an early and uneven stage.

 

A tipping point is expected by 2029, when AI will shift from training to large-scale inference, and agent deployment will reach the billions, embedding AI into enterprise operations. The rise of AI agents and agent-driven systems will accelerate this shift, reshaping how applications are built, deployed, and monetized across the enterprise.

 

Meredith Whalen, IDC's Chief Product and Research Officer, added: "The next phase of the AI market will be defined by execution. The opportunity is clear, but now execution is the constraint."
