Vishay Introduces Surface-Mount (SMD) Surge-Limiting PTC Thermistors to Enhance Board Efficiency and Reduce Costs
2025-10-30
Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has launched a new series of insulated surface-mount surge-limiting PTC thermistors. Designed specifically to enhance board efficiency and reduce costs in automotive and industrial applications, Vishay's PTCES series components achieve a maximum energy handling capability of up to 340 joules and a withstand voltage of 1200 V DC in a compact package.
Compared to competing products, this PTC thermistor series offers up to 260% higher energy handling capability, allowing designers to reduce the number of components, thereby saving board space and lowering overall costs. Additionally, the maximum voltage rating of this series is 20% higher than competing products, meeting a wider range of design requirements.
These thermistors provide current limiting and overload protection for AC/DC converters, DC-DC converters, DC busbars, energy discharge circuits, emergency discharge circuits, onboard chargers, battery charging equipment, and motor drives. In these applications, this self-protecting device can withstand over 100,000 surge power cycles and is AEC-Q200 certified for shock and vibration resistance, eliminating the need for adhesive fixation.
The PTCES series thermistors feature a solder-connected ceramic PTC package, housed in a self-extinguishing, washable UL94 V-0 compliant plastic casing with an insulation rating of 3 kV AC. The thermistors are RoHS compliant and are only 9.6 mm thick. They are suitable for automatic installation using pick-and-place equipment, effectively reducing placement costs.
